Yea I googled it, but I would like to hear opinions. I'd like to know an effective method of air conditioner filter cleaning that kills any germs that might be there completely. I'm also talking about an air conditioning unit, not central cooling.
Thanks!

HVAC Tech.: The best answer is – if it is one of those foam filters Wash it in a mild soapy solution, rinse and replace( you could gently squeeze out the excess water). If it is one of the interwoven metal types you could use more pressure from say a garden hose nozzle, but not so much as to tare it apart, and again with a mildly soapy solution. Then there are the ones made of synthetic fiber material, They can be placed directly under the kitchen sink tap and washed first from the side that faces the coil with as strong a flow as comes out. All of the above filters can be sprayed with "Lysol" to kill any germs, even while they are in use, BUT they still need to be taken out and cleaned at least once a month.
throw it away and purchase a new one. That is the most affective. OR vacuum it, or blow it out which ever is the easiest. This will give you some relief.
I agree! that one that came with it is a piece a crap, Go to home depot and purchase a pleated one, and cut it to fit then pull the cardboard loose from the remaining pieces and put around the edges of your cut pieces to make it more solid then tape the corners together and wahla custom filter. Dont get the cut to fit filters either. Anything you can pour salt through is not a good filter. And make sure the cardboard doesnt cover over the surface of the coil, this will restrict return air to that area which is a no no.
http://mr-mckenic.com/ spray directly on the evaporator
use broiling water and scrap it off
For a window unit filter, wash it with soap and water and dry it out.
However, you also need to clean the evaporator coil. Usually, a licensed A/C contractor should know about the products that clean the coils. The product is called Bio-Fresh by NuCalgon.
