Introducing Portable Air Cleaners
With home owners becoming increasingly aware of the problems associated with the quality of the air within their homes, the use of a portable air cleaner to bring about improvements is increasing.
However the choice of air cleaner is not an entirely straightforward matter. In the first of a planned series of articles we delve into some of the more basic issues and what you should first be thinking about when looking for a portable air cleaner. As a whistle stop, overview we give a simple explanation as to when an air purifier can be of benefit, why a portable air cleaner is better than a whole house air cleaner and how to use one.
Further articles providing straightforward simple explanations of the different types of air cleaner and the rating systems used to measure effectiveness are to follow, so please bookmark us to return for more information about portable air cleaners.

I have an air purifier with a HEPA filter that has become quite dirty more quickly than I expected. I was expecting to get about 5 years from the filter, but after just 18 months it is looking pretty dirty to me. Should I replace it now, or can I wait.

The check engine light is on and the rpm are all over the place at a red light, sometimes the engine shuts off. I checked in the air cleaner assembly and it looks like the cover box is broken where i think it should have some clips on the side where the air hose is. Any help?

I know even if they're a little too dirty, it can really run up your electric bill.

Just curious what people think. I live north of Houston, which isn't exactly known for it's air quality.
If you can back your answer with a reference URL or two, all the better. Thanks.

should I buy a disposable air filter to use with the 15 year old electrostatic air cleaner attached to my furnace? I think it would do a better job eliminating dust in my house.

Should corporations be allowed to own and develop common resources such as clean air, water, forest, coastal areas, ocean resources, ...? Why and why not?

I have a 1990 Chevy Caprice with a factory Chevy 350 tbi engine (vin code "7"). On the rear of the passenger side valve cover there is a hose that, from pictures i have seen, is supposed to connect to the side of the air cleaner, but its is missing the connecting hose. What is it called? Do I really need it? What is it? This is my first project car and if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Not enviornmental issue wise, but more like governmental wise. How were the two acts passed and supported by the government, interest groups, etc. what helped pass the laws? I do not need information about what happened after they were passed. I need to know why and how it was passed in the first place.

My tenants share a furnace and CA unit. One tennant smokes and the other doesn't and has asma. The smoker agreed to smoke outside but doesn't always. I as the landlord can't really get them to stop. All I can do is continue to ask and envetually evict the smoker. They're both ok tennants. I don't want to lose either one of them; they pay on time and nothing gets torn up. This will probably come up again. Getting the system would help in the future when the issue comes up again and I think it would be a ok investment. But I don't want to waste my money, the non-smoker isn't going to renew the lease and I'm not renewing the smokers lease. The non-smoker already threaten to leave.

The house my wife and I purchased has a Triton Electronic Air Cleaner attached to the furnace. I know little about them. I was told to remove the inner unit periodically, and wash it in the dishwasher. I've done this on a six month bases.
The first couple of years, the unit would sometimes make an electrical snapping noise when dirt, etc. came in contact. The unit no longer seems to do this. Is it no longer working? The high voltage indicator lights are both on.

Some companies charge around for a "whole-house" special. Others have quoted close to 0. What's the difference between them--and does air-duct cleaning really do any good? We have one cat, lots of dust in the house, and one member of the family with asthma. Plus, we had our basement finished a couple years ago, which I'm sure resulted in drywall dust getting into the ducts.

Is there any way I could use and test the quality of the air by myself? is there any test kit available in home improvement store? Thanks!
